When you install Joomla on your server and start using it, you would have noticed that the URLs have a totally different structure and pattern. These default URL structure is not search engine friendly, this simple tutorial shows how to enable the “Search Engine Friendly” URLs functionality of your Joomla. When SEO is enabled, your links will be in human-readable format and this will help your website rank higher in search results.
To enable SEO Friendly URLs in Joomla, login to administrator panel (http://www.yourdomain.com/administrator/). Once you have logged in, select the site configuration from the menu (Site->Global Configuration).
In the SEO Settings section change Search Engine Friendly URLs and Use Apache mod_rewrite to Yes.
Click on Save button from the top right menu. This will make your URLs search engine friendly. Make sure that you have renamed htaccess.txt to .htaccess before activating it. This can be done by logging into File manager on your server.
Once this is activated you can see that the URL which were previously;
http://yourdomain.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=1&Itemid=2
changes to SEO friendly (the URL will have .html if you have enabled “Add suffix to URLs);
http://yourdomain.com/About.html
This change should give better ranking for your site on search engines as well.
