Of late URL shortening service had a major leap with lots of new players in the area, especially because of sharing links on Twitter, Facebook and other social media. Google also jumped into this and launched its own URL shortening service- Goo.gl. Google had recently launched a new website for this shortening service and claimed this to be the most secure and fastest URL shortener available as of today. Royal Pingdom Blog has done a study and it proves that Goo.gl is indeed the fastest URL shortener.

The basic functionality of the service is to redirect the shortened URL to the original site. Pingdom conducted tests on how much time it takes for these services to open the original site and here are the results.
After seeing these numbers, there can be no doubt that Google has indeed managed to create a very speedy URL shortening service and it is indeed the fastest service in this test.
Few observations from the test;
- Goo.gl is almost 3x faster than Bit.ly overall
- The only place Goo.gl was beat was in Europe, where Is.gd actually managed to inch just ahead of it in terms of performance.
We can definitely expect Google to add more features to this service.
