WhatsApp is an extremely popular mobile messaging service which is available free for first year and you can download and install the app on any latest smartphone OS including Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone etc. You just need to have a mobile number and can start using WhatsApp on your Phone. Currently the service is limited only to mobile phone and not available on desktops.
But now an open source tool for WhatsApp on desktop is being developed. The goal is to create a stable and working WhatsApp desktop client and provide all those people with a great chatting application which can be used on both your smartphone and you desktop computer.
As of now the developers have just started with the coding work and they are using C# for developing the tool. Since the tool is open source, you can check the code and also participate in the development. There are no estimates on when it could come in reality as there are many hurdles as mentioned by the developers including the way WhatsApp works.
But if it really works out, it would be really useful for all WhatsApp users to text from your desktop and receive notifications.
You can have a look at the current code here.

Yes, not updated recently, but we cannot rule out it is abandoned!
