At the Google I/O conference, the company has announced Android One, a new Android initiative for developing markets to extend the smartphone experience. At the announcement, Google’s Sundar Pichai said that in a country like India, only 10% people have access to smartphones. To change things, Android One will provide better smartphone experience on low end devices.
There are few important things to note for the new Android One. This is intended for developing markets like India and will provide Nexus like experience in the lower price category. The device will have stock Android and come with custom apps for the market. Google will be taking care of the updates and will provide automatic updates to the phone.
The Android One will be initially rolled out in India with OEMs Micromax, Karbonn and also Spice Mobiles. This release should happen later this year.
Google also showed a phone running Android One and has features like dual SIM, SD card support, 4.5inch display, FM Radio and will still be priced below $100, which is less than INR 6000.
Android One will be rolled out to other markets later.
