Xiaomi had announced their latest software version, the MIUI 6 back in August 2014 and it was available for Mi4, the company’s flagship device. Xiaomi entered India in July with the launch of Mi3 which came with MIUI v5 on Android 4.4 KitKat and then came Redmi 1S and Redmi Note (3G and 4G). All these phones have the MIUI v5 and now the company has detailed the plans for MIUI 6 for these devices.
MIUI 6 is based on Android KitKat and hence these devices (which run on Android 4.3 and 4.2) will be getting the KitKat update. Mi product team in India has detailed the update timeline in MIUI forum.
MIUI 6 for Redmi Note 4G and Mi 3 will go to go into open beta testing in a few weeks, so once the testing is complete it would be rolled out via OTA. There is no time frame mentioned, but we expect couple of months before the actual roll out will start. Xiaomi is also planning to update the Redmi 1s to MIUI 6 in March around the same time as the China version.
Redmi Note 3G is also slated to get the update early this year, again no ETA announced.
Xiaomi is all set to announced Mi4 in India on January 28th and this is one of the most awaited phones as it has pretty good specs for a flagship device and we expect 64GB version of the device to arrive in India.
The company also announced they are going to release the kernel source for all future phones within three months of the device’s launch. In line with that schedule, they will be releasing the Redmi Note 4G kernel source by January 31st and Mi 3 and Redmi Note 3G kernel source by March.
