ASUS has tweaked the design of Zenfone series to accommodate the bigger battery and the Zenfone Max looks different in terms of design and overall finishing. The power and volume keys are on the right side, 3.5mm audio jack on the top and the micro USB at the bottom. The device is relatively thicker than Zenfone 2 Laser. The rear panel has a completely different finishing and comes with a textured matte finish.
There is a golden color frame running on the sides of the device which does give a premium look. The rear panel houses the 13MP camera, dual LED flash, laser autofocus and the ASUS branding. The front panel has the same 5.5 inch HD display, three capacitive touch buttons and a pattern below it. Overall, build quality wise, we feel the device looks much better than Zenfone 2 Laser.
The rear panel is removable and houses the dual SIM cards and micro SD card. With the 5000mAh non-removable battery, the device feels a bit heavy to use.
The phone has 5.5 inch HD display (1280 X 720p) and is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4. The display looks pretty vibrant and sharp as well. The display quality is similar to Zenfone 2 laser and the touch response is also good. Since it has IPS panel, the viewing angles are also decent.
The device is powered by powered by 64-bit Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 processor with up to 2GB of RAM. There is also 16GB internal storage which is expandable via micro SD card. The storage available in the first boot was around 10.28GB. The performance of the device in the first usage was pretty good and it was fairly smooth. It comes with Zen UI on top of Android Lollipop.
The phone also packs a 13MP camera with dual LED flash and laser auto focus and there is 5MP front camera for selfies. We will have a detailed review of the camera, so stay tuned to our channel for more updates. The camera interface and modes available are similar to other Zenfones. The phone packs a massive 5000mAh battery which is the highlight of the device and should have able to take you through 2 days of usage, although we need to test it further.
The phone will be exclusively available online at Flipkart. The phone will also be sold at ASUS Exclusive Stores and with other retailers from the second fortnight of January. The device is priced Rs 9,999 and comes in black and white variants. You can buy the device from here.
