At the event in Beijing, Xiaomi has unveiled the new MIUI 8. MIUI is the custom ROM from Xiaomi which ships with their smartphones. MIUI 8 is the latest iteration of the ROM and will be available for lot of devices in this year. MIUI 8 also comes with host of new features and improvements over MIUI 7 launched last year.
MIU 8 comes with changes in colors, more colorful and makes it younger. There has been changes to the overall look and feel which includes fonts and colors. So here is everything you wanted to know about MIUI 8 including availability and devices supported.
MIUI 8 comes with a new font which is more pleasing to the eye. The company claims that the eyes would still be comfortable after reading on phones for 6 hours.
Another major improvement is to the MIUI Gallery app. MIUI 8 supports video editing, in forms of cropping, adding filters, captions and music. You can add filters, effects and more directly from the albums. There are also option to add drawings, graffitis with the new brushes making the gallery experience better.
MIUI 8 also offers long screen captures, instead of capturing what is available on the screen, long capture scrolls the entire page and captures the image. This is pretty useful if you want to share screenshots of websites. The new scanner app on MIUI 8 can scan math equations and solve the instantly by providing step by step solution. You can also scan QR codes on products and search for them online. The calculator app now supports advanced conversions which includes currency, temperature etc.
The Notes app on MIUI 8 has been redesigned with new fresh templates added for notes. There is also grid view for better navigation. The note app now enables you to set password and fingerprint to secure your private notes.
MIUI 8 also introduces the Suspend button or Suspension ball. This is a small transparent icon on the screen which provides additional controls which can be customized. This is already available in some ROMs.
Power Management is one another important change to MIUI 8. If you are on power saver mode, background app activity is stopped and also it suspends sync, updates and background tasks. These are some of the new features in MIUI 8, more details available here.
Availability of MIUI 8:
Beta registrations for MIUI 8 will start on May 16th and beta testing will be from June 1st. The developer ROM will be out on June 17th.
