Vivo announced their latest flagship device in India, the X21, which is the first smartphone to feature an in-display fingerprint scanner. Vivo X21 was first showcased at Mobile World Congress and it is currently the flagship device for the company. Vivo X21 comes with a 6.28-inch Full HD+ resolution display and is powered by Snapdragon 660 Octa-core processor with 6GB of RAM and has 128GB of storage included. It also comes with a dual camera set up along with 3200mAh battery.
So how does the in-display fingerprint scanner work on Vivo X21? Let’s have a closer look at the technology.
In-Display Fingerprint Scanner- Industry first
Vivo X21’s in-display fingerprint scanner makes the design easier without the need for allotting a separate place on the rear panel or below the display for a fingerprint scanner. The Vivo X21 packs a Super AMOLED display and the fingerprint scanner is on the display.
Configuring the fingerprint scanner is quite easy and it is similar to how you configure it on other smartphones. Once the fingerprint is registered and when the user touches the screen for unlocking, the OLED display emits light to illuminate the finger which is placed on the display. The fingerprint scanner captures the fingerprint with the light reflected and the sensor then processes the optical signals to deliver crisp and sharp fingerprint images for matching.
When the phone is lifted by the user for unlocking, the display shows the area for unlocking and an icon will appear on the display. While the phone is in the pocket, this icon will not lit up.
Here is a video demo of the unlocking process.
The performance of the fingerprint scanner is extremely good and it is responsive and unlocks the device in quick time. Even though this is an industry first, the performance of fingerprint scanner is good and Vivo has done a commendable job here.
