All versions of Windows need an activation key, also called the product key. If you do not have a genuine product key for Windows, then you will not be able to use Windows 10 or Windows 11 versions. If you are buying a new laptop with Windows pre-installed, then you have an OEM key and this is valid for the laptop you have purchased. This is a pre-activated key and you do not have to manually enter the key. But, it is always good to have a backup of your key, in case you want to re-install at a later stage. So how do you recover product keys of Windows? Let’s find out!
How to Recover Product Keys of Windows and Microsoft Products:
By default, Windows does not show the activated product key on your laptop. This is where the free app Product Key Scanner comes in handy. It is a free tool that scans the Registry of Windows Operating system and finds the product keys of Windows and other Microsoft products. You can scan the Registry of your current Windows system, as well as you can scan the Registry from an external hard drive plugged into your PC.
When scanning the product keys of your current running system, you can also search product keys stored in BIOS, and search product keys by using WMI.
Once you have downloaded the app, you can run the app directly as it does not require any installation. The app is portable and can be run without any installation. It asks to search WMI and BIOS while doing the search for product keys.
Once the search is complete, you will be shown the list of all the product keys it has fetched from your system. This tool can find your product key only if it’s stored on your systems. For some license types, the product key is not stored in the Registry at all.
This app works not only with Windows keys, but also works with other paid Microsoft products which have the keys saved in the registry. You might see the same product key multiple times, simply because it’s stored in multiple locations or because the key was found with multiple scan methods (Registry, BIOS, WMI).
This tool works on any version of Windows, starting from Windows XP, and up to Windows 11. Both 32-bit and 64-bit systems are supported.
